In 2007, the Rijksmuseum acquired two tremdendously impressive Japanese temple guards (NIO): the largest temple guards outside Japan!
I met the guards and had my questions. It resulted in the return of these warriors to their native soil and in a bursting at the seams community art project with artist-in-residencies, high school exchange, a multi-day festival as well as a better understanding of the multiple perspectives and dimensions that go with these Nio.
For those who don’t yet know the wooden temple guards from the Rijksmuseum or would like to see them again: a meeting is planned on several days. For: ‘who are they , where did they come from, What are they doing here? Are they real / animated / alive?’ What is it like to come face to face with these stalwart sentinels.
